*‘State of the Elk’ to Be Presented by Hellgate Hunters and Anglers*

*5th annual event gives sportsmen road map for western Montana elk
populations*



*Missoula, Mont. – *Western Montana sportsmen can learn about the health
and habits of the region’s elk populations at Hellgate Hunters and Anglers’
5th annual State of the Elk address next Wednesday, May 25 at  6 pm at the
Montana Natural History Center.

Spring flight surveys, trend data, cow/calf ratios and collar data are just
a few of the topics slated for discussion at the popular event, where
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 2 Wildlife Manager Mike Thompson also
will be addressing a range of management challenges currently faced by the
office.


“We’ve scheduled this year’s State of the Elk before the application
deadlines for Elk B licenses to give folks more information about new
opportunities, as well as any changes in elk populations in their areas,”
said HHA President Kit Fischer. “More than 60 percent of Region 2 is public
lands, including some of the best elk habitat in Montana. Our goal with
State of the Elk is to give sportsmen the tools to capitalize on the
incredible opportunity provided by these public lands.”


HHA’s State of the Elk will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Montana Natural
History Center at 120 Hickory Street in Missoula. The event is free and
open to the public.

Since its formation 10 years ago, HHA has improved public access, restored
wildlife habitat, hosted educational events and served as a voice
representing the values of Missoula area sportsmen and women.
