The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is pleased to announce that it will
co-host Japanese-American Internee, Yukio Shimomura, as he presents his
program, “My 2 ½ Years Behind Barbed Wire in the United States.”

Yukio Shimomura was born in San Francisco and was a grade school student at
the outbreak of war. Shimomura and his family were sent first to an
internment camp in San Bruno, California before being sent to the Topaz War
Relocation Camp near Delta, Utah. Operated by the War Relocation Authority,
Topaz was home to over 9,000 internees and staff at its peak. The camp
operated from September 11, 1942 until October 31, 1945.

After being released from the camp, Shimomura and his family relocated to
Ogden, Utah where he graduated high school. He served his country in the
U.S. Army before attending Weber State University and Utah State University,
where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering. In his
professional life he has worked for HP as a software engineer, and later
with both Japanese and American Electronics companies in Human Resources.

Shimomura’s presentation will center on the impact of the War and Internment
on his family, as well as details about life in the camps. Following his
presentation, Mr. Shimomura will be happy to answer questions from the
audience.

In addition to his program, Shimomura will also be speaking to several
university classes and local High School students. Both the University of
Montana and the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula are pleased to welcome
him to Missoula. Please make plans to join us for this special event.
