“The idea that mass extinction results from catastrophic environmental change was largely developed more than two centuries ago by Cuvier (17). 
But what defines such an environmental catastrophe?   Newell (18) implicitly provides a practical definition: “Extinction... is not simply a result of 
environmental change but is also a consequence of failure of the evolutionary process to keep pace with changing conditions in the physical and 
biological environment” (18).   In other words, catastrophe results when the rate of environmental change exceeds a threshold.”
