Small Fruit Production & Using Urban Resources
RED HEN FARM & ORCHARD, MISSOULA

,WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20  || 4-7PM  || POTLUCK TO FOLLOW

At Red Hen Farm & Orchard <http://www.redhenfarm.net/>, Greg Peters and
Julie Engh-Peters produce fruit, eggs, and vegetables on 10 acres in the
Target Range Neighborhood of Missoula. Relying primarily on CSA and u-pick
marketing channels, they grow a wide range of fruits, including
strawberries, raspberries, elderberries, blueberries, honeyberries, goji
berries, currants, and apples from a fledgling orchard. During the Field
Day Greg and Julie will detail their growing methods, as well as some of
the unique challenges and resources that come with operating an urban farm.
Attendees will have the opportunity to see innovative approaches to farm
fertility and efficiency, including the strategic use of hugelkulturs, soil
amendments (including spent grain from a local brewer), and using veggie
oil from local restaurants to power their delivery vehicle.

Our field days are geared toward people who are just at the beginning of
their farm exploration—farm hands, interns, folks thinking about starting a
farm in the near future, and those who are currently in the startup
process. Of course, established farmers and ranchers are welcome too!
