Glass Pathway Installation at MUD

Missoula, MT— The Missoula Urban Demonstration Project (MUD) is installing
a repurposed glass pathway at the MUD site, 1527 Wyoming St, June 22nd from
9am-12pm. Community members are invited to take part in this volunteer
event or attend as observers. Following the glass pathway installation, MUD
is hosting a bring-your-own-picnic luncheon from 12-1pm, with a led site
tour at 12:30pm. Attendees can participate by lending a hand or simply
watching the functional work of art come to fruition.

A sturdy, permeable, and handicap accessible walkway will be formed using
recycled, crushed glass sourced from Missoula’s (I.E.) Recycling.
GravelPave2 matting will hold the glass in place. GravelPave2 is a porous
substrate, made from recycled plastic and designed to give stability to
gravel or glass pathways. Volunteers will help prepare the site, lay out
the GravelPave2 matting, and create a design with crushed glass in a range
of colors.

Von Common, a nonprofit that provides space and camaraderie in a community
of artists, will be facilitating the glass design for the day. Von Common
is a neighbor to MUD, also housed in the River Road neighborhood down
Missoula’s sustainability strip on Wyoming St.

During the bring-your-own picnic lunch, MUD will offer a site tour starting
at 12:30pm. The tour will educate about other sustainability demonstration
on the site as well as feature MUD’s other programs and resources..
Volunteers for the workday are asked to bring gloves, a water bottle,
sunscreen, closed-toe shoes, and their own lunch for the picnic afterwards.
RSVPs can be sent to vista at mudproject.org and are appreciated but not
required.

This community event is a demonstration of how waste products such as glass
can be repurposed into permeable pathways. MUD’s goal with the glass
pathway installation is to model an environmentally-friendly option for
waste reduction that simultaneously beautifies Missoula’s parks and
community spaces. “By showing our community how glass can be used locally
we are saving landfill space, trucking on the road, and the water pollution
that comes from the runoff on asphalt surfaces“ said Deb Fassnacht of The
Watershed Education Network.

Permeable pathways are a great alternative to impervious surfaces like
conventional asphalt and concrete that result in water being diverted into
storm drains, preventing it from reaching the soil below. Permeable
pathways allow rainwater to seep through and replenish our aquifer. This
pathway utilizes waste from Missoula as a resource , a part of Missoula’s
Zero by Fifty plan, which can be viewed at: https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/

According to the City of Missoula, “Zero Waste means designing and managing
products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and
toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and
not burn or bury them.”

This event is partnering with the Missoula Time Bank as a Community Banks
event. The Missoula Time Bank is a service exchange which uses time rather
than money. Volunteers at the MUD Glass Pathways Installation can bank half
of their hours to receive other services through the Missoula Time Bank.

The MUD project is a non-profit that promotes urban sustainable living. The
organization provides the community with a tool library, a truck share, a
demonstration site, youth education programs, and workshops. Learn more
about MUD and upcoming events at mudproject.org. The MUD Glass Pathways
project is made possible with support from the Office of Neighborhoods &
Community Forum.
