*TELEPHONE NEWS CONFERENCE: YES for Responsible Mining Initiative*

Supporters of a Montana citizens' initiative to protect public health and
clean water from irresponsible mining operations expect approval on
Thursday for their petition to collect voter signatures.

Approval of the petition is expected before noon on Thursday from the
Montana Secretary of State's Office.

Reporters are invited to a telephone news conference to announce the
initiative at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3. The dial-in number for the
conference call is (406) 272-4234.

Spokespeople on the call will include:

   - David Brooks, executive director, Montana Trout Unlimited.
   - Paul Roos, Black Foot River outfitter and guide.
   - Tom Dean, Smith River landowner, owner of Milo Creek Carvings, Great
   Falls.
   - Seabring Davis, writer, co-owner of Chico Hot Springs Resort.
   - Steve Gilbert, biological consultant and Smith River guide.

The likely initiative number for the measure is I-186.

Supporters must gather 25,468 verified voter signatures by June 22 to place
the initiative on the Nov. 6 election ballot.
