A little cross-pollination from Bozeman:

John,

In response to your conversation starter question, I believe that one of the greatest ways to have a tangible effect on climate change is to address our horrendous food waste problem. It is estimated that about 1/3 of all food produced for consumption is never eaten. This waste contributes to climate change in all stages; production (using fuel/land/chemicals to grow food that isn't used), transportation (buring fuel to get the food to market), and landfilling (where organic waste decomposes without oxygen and produces methane gas, 25X more effective at trapping heat in our atmosphere than C02).

What actions to take to attack food waste's contribution to climate change:
Shop Local - Support our local farmers and eliminate the fuel consumption required to ship food around the world. Or, create your own garden if possible!
Shop Smart - Don't over-buy. Plan ahead so that you avoid things spoiling in the fridge, and get creative with leftovers. Donate to the food bank to feed humans, or donate to a farmer to help them feed their animals.
Compost - Be responsible for any waste that you create and KEEP IT OUT OF THE LANDFILL! Backyard composting is a great way to take care of any inedible food waste and put the nutrients contained within them back into the soil. If you don't have the ability to do this at home, check out YES Compost <http://yescompost.com/> or Happy Trash Can <http://happytrashcan.net/> that offer curbside food waste collection services for homes and businesses. (Disclaimer: I am the owner of YES Compost and would love to have you sign up with me, but both companies offer a compost solution)
We have fantastic soil in the Gallatin Valley and wonderful food production given the short growing season, so take advantage of it and help fight climate change in these immediate, effective, and rewarding ways!

Scientists believe that climate change is having a negative impact on Montana. Drought, vanishing glaciers, and worsening wildfires are all symptoms of climate change. This series is designed to engage the community in a dialogue about what can and should be done to address climate change.

Education

The Montana Climate Assessment <http://montanaclimate.org/chapter/executive-summary> (MCA) was published in 2017. The MCA is an effort to synthesize, evaluate, and share credible and relevant scientific information about climate change in Montana with the citizens of the State. The MCA is the result of two years of work by UM and MSU faculty and students, state and federal agency researchers, non-profit organizations, resource managers, and citizens from across Montana.

According to the Montana Climate Assessment, warming temperatures over the next century, especially during spring, are likely to reduce snowpack at mid and low elevations. [high agreement, robust evidence]

 Conversation Starter

• Have you noticed reduced snowpack impacting your outdoor recreation?

• Climate change is such a large and complex issue that we sometimes feel overwhelmed and helpless.
o What are simple things we can personally do to address climate change?
