PROGRAM
Sustainability is a major global challenge, and social-personality psychologists are contributing meaningfully to a more sustainable society. This year's theme is "The Three Pillars of Sustainability." In previous years, the Sustainability Preconference has focused largely on the environmental protection pillar of sustainability. This year's theme aims to draw in more of the other two pillars: social equity and economic viability. Speakers will discuss topics such as the values and beliefs tied to each of the three pillars, how each pillar will be affected by a changing climate, and interventions to improve sustainability.

We're putting together a spectacular program for this year's preconference! It includes a keynote, invited speaker sessions, and an interactive workshop, all focused on broadening the approaches we use to incorporate more aspects of sustainability in our research. Our speakers will be:

“Conservationists are unquestionably useful people. And among the many useful services that they have rendered has been that of dramatizing the vast appetite the United States has developed for materials of all kinds.”

“But what of the appetite itself? Surely this is the ultimate source of the problem. If it continues its geometric course, will it not one day have to be restrained? Yet in the literature of the resource problem this is the forbidden question. Over it hangs a nearly total silence.”

===============================

PURPOSES OF THE CLIMATE AND BIODIVERSITY LIST:

To gather and transmit information about the ecological impact of global warming and its consequence in the form of a changing climate. This transmittal is for the benefit of the conservation and science communities and, by extension, the general public. The related topic of how to reduce emissions, although crucially important to conservation and economic policies, will be left for other forums.

The Climate and Biodiversity list is not a discussion list. Members have said they enjoy having access to information without having to wade through discussion about that information. And because this list often posts information on relatively high volume, keeping discussion down to bare minimum reduces risk of overloading members' email accounts. Thank you for your understanding.
