*"Can Climate Justice Co-Exist with US Empire?"*
A panel discussion about who should control land, water, air, and movement
in the midst of the climate crisis.

Wednesday, September 25, 12:30 in the UC Theater.
Family friendly (kid activities available)

Co-sponsored by the Montana Chapter of the Sierra Club and UM Climate
Action Collective

As communities in the US and around the world struggle to manage the direct
impacts of fossil fuel extraction and extreme weather events, US industries
and the US military continue to emit a large proportion of the world’s
greenhouse gases. The US government also continues to exert an enormous
amount of control over land, water, air, industry, and the movement of
people on a global level.

What’s the link between immigration justice, climate justice, and fighting
threats to indigenous sovereignty? How should we think about the
relationship between US imperialism and climate chaos? How should we
respond to the increasing wave of climate migrants aiming to move to the
US? Does the US military have a role to play in solving the climate crisis,
given that US intervention has become one of the largest global drivers of
greenhouse gas emissions? How do we respond to the ongoing crisis of
murdered and missing indigenous people, especially given the increase of
violence related to resource extraction on indigenous land? What are some
local interventions that can strengthen the common cause between climate
justice, immigration justice, and indigenous justice?

We will be discussing the relationship between US empire, local grassroots
efforts for immigrant justice, indigenous sovereignty, environmental
justice, and climate change with a panel of local community organizers and
activists, including:

George Price (Member of Indian People’s Action and the Confederated Salish
and Kootenai Tribes’ Climate Change Advisory Committee, retired lecturer of
African American Studies and Native American Studies)

Claire Charlo (Civil Advocate for the Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribes,
Member of Idle No More)

Laura Folkwein (Chair of Montanans for Immigrant Justice, Associate Pastor
at United Church of Christ)
Sesar Bonilla (Employment and Training Specialist at Rural Employment
Opportunities)
