We culminated two years of hard work by scoring a major legal victory in October that halted the Soldier-Butler timber sale in the Ninemile Connectivity Area for grizzly bears. The court ruling made front page news and we followed up with an op-ed that was published in newspapers across Montana. The ruling found the Forest Service must obey its own Forest Plans and fully account for the impact of forest roads on grizzly bears. This helps protect the ability of grizzly bears to reach the Bitterroot Ecosystem.

•Grizzly Bear Denning and Connectivity Report

We co-sponsored a webinar release of our influential report on grizzly bear denning habitat and demographic connectivity. We have shared this information with regional partners as well as the U.S. Forest Service. This information is a vital component of our Citizen Forest Plan and crucial to National Forest Plan revisions.

•Fire Webinar

We produced “Climate, Wildfire and Communities”, a webinar on fire management featuring Missoula County Commissioner Dave Strohmaier and Fire Ecologist George Wuerthner. If you missed the presentation, we’ll be posting it soon on our website montanaforestplan.org.

•Letters to Agencies

We led the way with letters signed by multiple organizations sent to various agencies, including the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, regarding their legal obligations to threatened and endangered species and their responsibility to be transparent in their activities.

•Organization of the Year

In recognition of our work and accomplishments we were recently honored by the Friends of the Clearwater with their award for “Organization of the Year.” A cornerstone of our approach is to work closely with other groups that are working to protect wild habitat, enhance connectivity, and advance management proposals based on the best available science. Thanks to Friends of the Clearwater, Wilderness Watch, Wild Earth Guardians, Friends of the Bitterroot and all the groups and individuals that we had an opportunity to work with during the last 12 months. Special thanks to the individuals and foundations that supported our work through their financial contributions.

Many challenges remain ahead of us and we will need your continued support to remain effective. As we round out the year, we hope you’ll contribute to our continued success.
