“… Harvesting the Biosphere adds to the growing chorus of warnings about the current trajectory of human activity on a finite planet, of which climate change is only one dimension.

“One can quibble with some assumptions or tweak Smil’s calculations, but the bottom line will not change, only the time it may take humanity to reach a crisis point.”

Wall Street’s housing grab continues

As rising rates deter families from buying, being a rentier looks as appealing as ever

https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2022/05/25/wall-streets-housing-grab-continues <https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2022/05/25/wall-streets-housing-grab-continues>

Excerpt

Across the rich world house-hunters perturbed by high prices and rising rates are holding fire on mortgage applications. In America new home sales have crashed to two-year lows.

One group of buyers, however, remains unfazed: Wall Street. What began as an opportunistic bet on single-family housing during America’s subprime crash of 2007-10 has morphed into a mainstream asset class. Today all sorts of institutions—from private-equity firms to insurers and pension funds—are piling into the sector. They are unlikely to vacate it: being a rentier looks as appealing as ever.

Amid Jan. 6 Revelations, Election Lies Still Dominate the G.O.P.

Excerpts

Yet the most striking revelation so far may be how deeply Mr. Trump’s disregard for the truth and the rule of law have penetrated into the Republican Party, taking root in the fertile soil of a right-wing electorate stewing in conspiracy theories and well tended by their media of choice. The Republican response to the hearings — a combination of indifference, diversion and doubling down — reflects how central the lie of a stolen election has become to the party’s identity.

Like mint in the garden, the seeds that the Trump team planted between Election Day 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021, are now growing out of control, aided by the former president’s allies.

Excerpts

Russia cutting gas supplies to Europe has long been one of the EU’s greatest fears. This week it became a reality.

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, said the cuts by state-run Gazprom appeared to be a “strategic” move by Moscow that would remind Europe that it should not feel “too safe or too comfortable”.

What is clear is that Russia’s decision … has moved the energy crisis into a new and dangerous phase.

Economic thinking is at a crucial inflection point
The market-friendly governing philosophy that triumphed in the 1980s is on the defensive

By Martin Sandbu
https://www.ft.com/content/4575b986-ef11-478d-a7e2-0451ae71b0e1 <https://www.ft.com/content/4575b986-ef11-478d-a7e2-0451ae71b0e1>

Excerpts

Soaring energy prices have encouraged another form of inflation, this one rhetorical. Comparisons of our current challenges with the world’s economic and political struggles in the 1970s are now a dime a dozen.

The similarities end with the effects for political and economic thinking. Once the turmoil of the 1970s had discredited the mixed economies of the postwar era, it paved the way for the market-liberalising transformations pioneered by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

Back then, economic failure produced something approaching a consensus that “government is the problem”, as Reagan put it. But today the opposite is the case

This raises two questions. Why this difference in the political consequences of seemingly similar economic crises? And is today’s turn to a more interventionist state permanent or a flash in the pan?

The simplest answer to the first question is that when things feel intolerable, people blame the status quo and demand change. In the 1970s that meant deregulating a rigid economy. Today it may mean re-regulating an unchained one.

The current economic debate is about much more than managing cost of living pressures. The question is whether we will finally put the last 40 years behind us and settle on something better.

Canada’s oil sands: why some of the world’s dirtiest fuel is now in hot demand

Excerpts

When Joe Biden scrapped a permit for the huge Keystone XL pipeline just hours after entering the White House last year, a death knell seemed to be ringing for Canada’s oil sands, by far the largest supplier of foreign oil to the US.

In Alberta, a province where just about everyone is related to someone who works in the oilfield, the new US president’s decision deepened the gloom.

Yet, 18 months later, the mood is brightening as surging oil prices start to revive the economy. Alberta’s producers — forced to contend with sub-zero oil prices just a couple of years ago — are using the windfall from $100 a barrel crude to repair their balance sheets and beef up dividends. Production is rising again. So is export capacity: a pipeline system to the Midwest has been expanded and another to the West Coast is due online next year.

A Brief History of Anti-Fascism
By James Stout <https://www.smithsonianmag.com/author/james-stout/>

Excerpts

Historian Robert Paxton’s Anatomy of Fascism—one of the definitive works on the subject—lays out the motivating passions of fasicsm, which include “the right of the chosen group to dominate others without restraint from any kind of human or divine law”.

At its heart, fascism is about premising the needs of one group, often defined by race and ethnicity over the rest of humanity; anti-fascists have always opposed this.

The leftists of Germany’s Roter Frontkämpferbund (RFB) first used the famous clenched-fist salute  <https://academic.oup.com/jdh/article-abstract/13/4/319/482592>as the symbol of their fight against intolerance; when, in 1932, they became Antifaschistische Aktion, or “antifa” for short, they fought Nazi anti-Semitism and homophobia under the flags with the red-and-black logo <https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12115-018-0245-y> that antifa groups wave today <https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/what-is-antifa-a-look-at-the-movement-trump-is-blaming-for-violence-at-protests>. That fist was first raised by German workers, but would go on to be raised by the Black Panthers, Black American sprinters Tommy Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics <https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/09/24/they-didnt-takeaknee-the-black-power-protest-salute-that-shook-the-world-in-1968/> and Nelson Mandela, among many others.

In the United Kingdom, anti-fascists became an important movement as anti-Semitism emerged as a salient force. In October 1936, Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists attempted to march through Jewish neighborhoods in London <http://www.cablestreet.uk/>. Mosley's 3,000 fascists, and the 6,000 policemen who accompanied them, found themselves outnumbered by the anti-fascist Londoners who had turned out to stop them.

Estimates of the crowd vary from 20,000 to 100,000. They raised their fists, like German anti-fascists, and chanted “No pasaran” ("They shall not pass!", the slogan of the Spanish militia), and they sung in Italian, German and Polish <https://libcom.org/library/fascists-and-police-routed-battle-cable-street>. They succeeded: The fascists did not pass, and Cable Street became a symbol of the power of a broad anti-fascist alliance in shutting down fascist hate speech on the streets.

One area of particular concern is how climate change will affect the spread of insect-borne diseases. These include dengue fever, malaria, Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Rift Valley fever, chikungunya and yellow fever. They are spread through the bite of 'vectors' such as mosquitoes, ticks and flies.

“if Americans were asked point blank whether they would agree to reduce their energy consumption by one-half, many would probably recoil in apprehension and reject the idea.

"Yet energy consumption in 1960 was about half of what is now [ 1970 ]. Many of us remember 1960. Surely we had a civilized country then, with roads, electricity, entertainment, and so on. Yet we we were consuming half the energy.”
