<pre>University of Montana students will kick their REINVEST MONTANA campaign
into gear tomorrow at noon in the University Center. There is a march to
Gilkey Hall and a "speak out" outside the University Foundation's Board of
Trustees meeting. The students want "to call on trustees to Lead With Us in
taking action by divesting from coal, oil, and gas and reinvesting in a
just transition for Montana communities."
Climate change is happening in Montana now, the organizers say, and the
Foundation must no longer support "the violence of the fossil fuel industry
-- the building of pipelines on indigenous lands, rising sea waters, and
countless oil spills."
Divestment -- taking money from the fossil fuel industry -- is important.
Why? Because we are burning so much fossil fuels, we are going to make
keeping our commitment to the Paris Climate Accords impossible. The numbers
are unmistakable, according to the British writer, George Monbiot, in a
recent article in The Guardian

The Paris agreement sets the ceiling for global warming at 1.5 C over
historic averages. Burning all the coal, oil, and gas the fossil fuel
industry has lined up in production and development is likely to take us to
temperatures above 2 C. "And even if all coal mining were to be shut down
today," Monbiot writes, "the oil and gas lined up so far would take it past
1.5C."
"The notion that we can open any new reserves, whether by fracking for gas,
drilling for oil or digging for coal, without scuppering the Paris
commitments is simply untenable," Monbiot says.
Bonbiot calls for the same solution the students organizing the Reinvest
Montana rally are calling for: STOP DIGGING!
To honor the Paris agreement, we as citizens must confront companies that
have invested heavily in production and development of fossil fuel
reserves, and we must make sure our governments retrain and re-employ the
people who would lose work.That's exactly what UM students are advocating.
They need our support. I hope to see you tomorrow at this important rally.
