wilderness legend. He has been involved in wilderness
advocacy since the 1960s, when he wrote several important
papers on wilderness as a graduate student at the
University of Montana School of Forestry, which are now
preserved in the historical archives of the University of
Idaho.

He worked as a Field Representative for The Wilderness
Society and later with the Montana Wilderness Association.
He was deeply involved in the successful campaigns leading
to designation of the Scapegoat, Great Bear,
Absaroka-Beartooth, Lee Metcalf and Rattlesnake
Wildernesses and also the Montana Wilderness Study Areas
Act of 1977.

He has operated a wilderness and river outfitting business
for decades and has led numerous university field courses
in wilderness. He has authored many books and hiking field
guides featuring his photography, including Wild Montana
and Montana Wildlands.
