In order to win in the court of public opinion, you have to ensure the public understands the issue. The settlers brought cattle with them, which carried brucellosis, a disease that causes cattle to abort fetuses. The cattle transmitted the disease to wildlife. There has never been a documented case of a Yellowstone buffalo transmitting brucellosis back to a cow in the wild.
