<p><strong>Missoula, MT </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">- </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">On January 17, 2022, the Missoula MLK Day Celebration will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Luther King by engaging our community in dialogue about race and justice through a virtual Intergenerational and</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">community-led celebration; c</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">losed captioning will be available</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The event will open with a </span><strong>Land Acknowledgment </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">led by Arleen Adams & Shelly Fyant and an </span><strong>MLK Jr. Day History and recognition </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">led by Murray Pierce. Our </span><strong>Keynote Speaker </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">will be Dr. Laurellé C. Warner. Dr. Warner is the MSW program director, professor of Social Work, and associate director of the Donald Blake Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Culture for Walla Walla University. She is also the lead researcher of LEARN Missoula. LEARN Missoula’s vision is to use BIPOC-generated knowledge to transform Missoula into a space of safety, place, and belonging where whiteness is de-centered at a structural level, particularly in local government. In addition to Dr. Warner’s extensive professional experience, she is passionate about her research focusing on resilience in the lives of Black women and men. This event will also</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> feature the </span><strong>annual MLK Jr.</strong><strong> Y</strong><strong>outh Art & Essay Contest </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">winners and music from the Great Falls Gospel Choir and </span><strong>local artists </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Elijah</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Jalil Paz</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fisher, Safi Elongo, and Andre Floyd; spoken word by Ja’Ton Simpson, and a traditional Hula by the UM Pacific Islanders Club. Lizzie Mills-Low and Brandon Pannell will lead the </span><strong>youth call to action </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">and share their perspective on Dr. King’s quote, </span><strong>“We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.” </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">These youth leaders will allow us to reflect on our intersectionality and the complexity of our identity within society. The event will help us resonate with Dr. King’s teachings and the issues we face right here in Missoula and across Montana. This year the Missoula MLK Day’s sponsors are EmpowerMT; Walla Walla University; Clearwater Credit Union; Providence Health Center; Missoula County; YWCA Missoula; Blackfoot Communications; UCC Missoula; Emmaus Campus Ministry; Hide and Sole; The Missoulian; First Presbyterian Church; and the Clark Fork Coalition. The Missoula MLK Planning Committee includes Sierra Pannell, Murray Pierce, Jamar Galbreath, Sage Plumage, Dexter Royes, Ja’Ton Simpson, Rajiem Seabrook, John Lund, Heidi Wallace, and Rozlyn Haley. </span></p>
