What does it mean to “be a man”? The cultural definition of manhood is
changing in positive ways. Being a man should mean to be kind, respectful,
and brave. Yet many boys still grow up with messages about manhood that
encourage them to denigrate women, use violence against others, and
suppress their emotions in unhealthy ways.

Unhealthy ideas about masculinity have other negative impacts:

● Compared to girls, boys are two times more likely to flunk or drop
out of school[1]

● Every day three or more boys commit suicide[2]

● 93% of boys are exposed to internet porn before age 18[3]

● Of all mass shootings in the U.S. in the last 30 years, 99% were
committed by men and boys[4]

NCBI Missoula and Missoula City-County Relationship Violence Services are
partnering to spark community dialogue about this crisis. The two
organizations are hosting a free screening of the acclaimed documentary
“The Mask You Live In,” followed by a brief, interactive discussion. The
film seeks to get to the root of these staggering statistics by examining
the effects of unhealthy masculinity in our society.

The Silver Theater, formerly the World Theater, was purchased by the Silver
Foundation this year. The Foundation is providing the space for free, as
the lobby is still in the process of renovation. The theater can seat 235
people.

The film screening is part of the Not In Our State Sexual Assault Summit,
which is hosted by the University of Montana on November 8-11.
