Dozens of collaborative groups are active today, and many units of the U.S.
Forest Service have embraced the concept of deeply engaging with
stakeholders rather than just receiving input at a public hearing. The
Forest Service and stakeholders increasingly view collaboration as an
important, pro-active strategy to resolving “wicked” problems and seemingly
intractable disputes. Yet as collaboration sees more support, critics of
the collaborative approach are becoming more vocal.

In the NFF’s role to support collaborative processes across the country,
it’s important to us that we understand, and seek to address, the
criticisms and conflicts around collaboration. The issue is one that we
discuss, think about, and put into practice through direct facilitation and
other assistance on a daily basis.

The NFF is pleased to be a client of the Harvard Negotiation & Mediation
Clinical Program (HNMCP). As part of the NFF project, this spring a HNMCP
student team is looking at recent critiques of collaboration across the
United States through interviews and other analysis.

In the peer learning session, the HNMCP team will share their findings,
touching on themes related to the following questions:

   - What are stakeholders’ concerns with the current use of collaboration
in the stewardship of National Forests?
   - How can the NFF address those concerns, including when NFF is directly
involved and when it is not directly involved with a collaborative group?
   - What are strategies and best practices that collaborative groups can
use to make collaboration more effective and bring more parties to the
   table?

We look forward to a robust discussion following the presentation where
participants can share their own experiences and reflections on strategies
to ensure the collaborative process is fair, open and honest.

We hope you’ll join us for this upcoming peer learning session!
