The House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation, led by Master Carver Jewell
James, have embarked on a totem pole journey across the Pacific Northwest,
and will hold a ceremony to bless the *22-foot, brightly painted totem at
The Salvation Army, 355 South Russell Street, Missoula, MT, on Sunday,
August 28, 2016 from 4-6 pm.*

*Who: Lummi Nation Totem Pole Journey*

*What: Blessing ceremony of totem pole in Missoula. (Free
dinner provided!)*

*Where: The Salvation Army; 355 South Russell Street, Missoula, MT*

*When: Sunday, August 28, 2016 from 4-6 pm*

The journey follows the May 9, 2016 decision of the Army Corps of Engineers
to deny the permit for the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal coal terminal
at Cherry Point based on its potential impacts on the treaty fishing rights
of the Lummi Nation.

The new, and just as significant, threat to the Lummi and other tribes is
the *dramatic increase in fossil fuels from the Bakken oil fields* in the
United States and the Alberta tar sands oil fields.

If the proposed expansions are approved it could mean up to a tenfold
increase in fossil fuel exports from Washington State and British
Columbia. It would also mean a significant increase in oil trains and
additional tanker traffic in the Salish Sea.

Please plan to attend the blessing ceremony and free meal of local food
this Sunday August 28 to demonstrate Missoula's passionate support for the
Lummi tribe and their work against fossil fuel transport in the Pacific
Northwest.
