*Spontaneous Construction Event*

*Missoula, Montana (September 16th, 2017) – *What began in 2005 as an
organizational birthday party is now Home ReSource’s signature annual
event. On Saturday, September 16th, the nittiest, grittiest, smashinest,
bashinest, clangenest, bangenest, creativist, barbaloot-savinest party in
town continues as Spontaneous Construction (aka SponCon) returns to the
corner of Russell and Wyoming in Missoula.

“Moving Missoula toward Zero Waste takes work and diligence, but it is
totally do-able and can be a heap of fun. Reducing and reusing are highly
creative acts,” says Home ReSource Executive Director Katie Deuel. “Our
founders knew that, which is why they made SponCon an annual opportunity
for the community to participate, engage, and create.”

At this one-of-a-kind competition, teams have seven hours from inspiration
to completion to craft fun and functional items from just about any of the
building materials at Home ReSource. Teams compete side-by-side in the Home
ReSource parking lot amidst hundreds of onlookers in an atmosphere made
festive by live music, local food, and free, creative, family-friendly
activities.

“We’re thrilled that nearly half of the 26 registered teams include youth,”
says Jeremy Drake, Community Engagement Manager at Home ReSource. “When we
engage young Missoulians in the key pieces of the Zero Waste puzzle –
choosing to do it, knowing how to do it, and working together to make it
happen –all in a fun way, then they lead us in a shift toward norms that
will make our community stronger.” SponCon and ZWAP!, the Zero Waste
Ambassadors Program for 5th graders, are two of the opportunities that Home
ReSource offers Missoulians to build skills and knowledge to move Missoula
toward Zero Waste.

For those who aren’t ready to step into the contestant area, SponCon offers
activities for all ages such as Paint-a-Door, Spin Art, the White Hole, and
Giant Jenga. New this year is the Doodads Creation Station led by Deb
Scott, winner of “Best in Show” in the Creative Reuse Division at the 2017
Western Montana Fair. The Found Sound Explosion at 1:30 p.m. is a chance
for everyone to make a joyful noise on invented instruments made especially
for the event.

Judges determine what SponCon creations will go to the auction block at the
nonprofit’s annual “Celebrating Reuse, Building Community” Banquet and
Benefit Auction, where supporters bid on and buy pieces to help fund Home
ReSource’s Community Sustainability Programs including ZWAP!, Zero Waste,
reuse workshops, youth internships and apprenticeships, job-skills
training, and more. Celebrating Reuse, Building Community will be held this
year at The Wilma on Friday, November 3rd.

Each year, an estimated 500 contestants, spectators, and sponsors
contribute to the success of SponCon. Deuel comments, “Spontaneous
Construction celebrates so many of the ways that this community can and
does work together to build a better tomorrow – building beautiful objects
from what might have been trash, reducing waste and pollution through
reuse, and bringing people together to have fun in the process.”
