Women's Navigating with Map & Compass Class

Feel empowered when you're in the backcountry by knowing exactly where you
are and where you're going by using a map and compass. Learn hands-on
orienteering in a supportive space at this all-women's navigation
class. *Register
below*.

In this outdoor workshop, cartographer Amelia Hagen-Dillon will teach you
to use a map and compass to plan a route and stay on it. You'll learn how
to read a topographic map, the parts of a compass, and how to use a map and
compass in tandem. You'll be able to pinpoint your location through
triangulation and then navigate to new locations by following a bearing.

Each participant will get their very own Cairn Cartographics map of the
Missoula area. We will have a few compasses on hand for participants to
use, but please bring your own if you have one. (Many phones have compass
apps.) The class will begin at the Greenough Park Pavilion for the
classroom portion, and then we'll hike to Waterworks Hill for hands-on
practice. Please dress appropriately.

This class is a collaboration between Cairn Cartographics
<https://cairncarto.com/> and Ecology Project International
<https://www.ecologyproject.org/> (EPI), a local science education
nonprofit. All proceeds from the class support EPI's #STEM4Good campaign to
engage more girls in hands-on science and empower them to pursue careers in
STEM. To learn more about the campaign, please visit EPI's website
