>>> Ridge Collection Scholarship Recipients Discuss Their Research on Controlling Chronic Pain Thru Storytelling, Assessing Youth Suicide Prevention Strategies & Brain Function as It Relates to Emotion, Behavior, Cognition
>>> [MISSOULA MT May 4, 2018]

>>> The Institute of Health and Humanities (IHH), a center at the University of Montana College of Humanities and Sciences, will sponsor the annual Ridge Symposium Tuesday, May 8, at 5:15 p.m., in the Learning Center at Providence St. Patrick Hospital, located on the first floor of the Broadway Building, 500 West Broadway. Each year IHH awards scholarships to University of Montana students for their research and creative works on topics at the intersection of health and/or healthcare and the Humanities. Students present their research at the symposium. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

>>> Jan VanRiper, executive director of IHH says, “If past symposia are any indication, the student presentations will be interesting to the public, health care practitioners, as well as those in academia. It's an opportunity for students to showcase their excellent work, and for the community to see and discuss health and illness issues that affect us all from a Humanities, rather than a strictly scientific, perspective.”

>>> This year’s Ridge scholarship awardees include Amy Thompson, Kim Spurzem and Cali Caughie. Thompson, a Community Health Masters candidate will present The Beauty in Pain: Storytelling and the Experience of Chronic Pain. Spurzem, a Social Work Masters candidate will present: Assessing Montana’s Youth for Suicide Prevention Strategies. Caughie, a Doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology, emphasis Neuropsychology, will present: Brain Vignettes: A Window in to the Experience of Neuropsychological Impairment. As a Community Health expert Amy Thompson says, “Chronic pain is a huge problem in our country, with an estimated 100 million people suffering from chronic pain every year. We have a corresponding opioid epidemic and our systems haven't seemed to grasp or understand chronic pain or how to heal it or shift it. The Ridge Scholarship allowed me to explore the mystery in the experience of pain, through the lens of story.”

>>> Scholarships are open to undergraduates having completed two years and graduate students having a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Recipients are requested to utilize the Ridge Library Collection which houses Humanities resources in medical and other health and healthcare-related areas. The Ridge Library is housed at the Learning Center.
>>>
>>> For the first time, this year, IHH also made Ridge Professional Awards to qualified UM faculty, those serving in clinical or research positions at UM, and local healthcare practitioners. The Ridge Professional Symposium was held on May 1.
>>>
>>> The mission of the Institute of Health and Humanities is to harness the expertise, education, practices, research, and insights gained from the humanities, social sciences and arts to enhance the health, healthcare and well-being of individuals and communities in western Montana.
