Hike & Write with Union of Concerned Scientists Western Montana: Scientific Integrity Act

June 8th we are bridging two of our favorite things; advocating for science-based policy and recreating in Montana’s public spaces. Please join us on our first “Hike & Write with UCS Western MT.” We will be hiking up Waterworks to the Jeannette Rankin Peace Park (the giant peace sign on the hill), enjoying snacks and good conversation, then soaking in the views while we write letters to Congress in support of the Scientific Integrity Act. After writing, we will continue to the ridge line, or folks are welcome to head back to their cars.

The Scientific Integrity Act is legislation that would protect public scientific research and reports from the influence of political and special interests. The bill empowers federal scientists to openly share their research and prohibits any employee from censoring or manipulating scientific findings. It would preserve the independence of agencies that fund, conduct, or oversee scientific research or the analysis of research.

We will be meeting at the Waterworks Trailhead parking lot at 10:00am. To get to the trailhead, take Spruce St. east over the train tracks until it turns into Greenough Dr. Go under the overpass and the trailhead will be the first turn off on your left (Minicker Loop). There are no bathrooms or water available at the trailhead. It is 0.3 miles to the peace sign, we walk around 3.5 miles total.

Please bring water, snacks, and a hard surface to write on (a clipboard or field guide would work well). We will provide paper, writing utensils, and resources on the Scientific Integrity Act.

This event is hosted by Union of Concerned Scientists' Western Montana Local Team, a non-partisan science and democracy advocacy group based in Missoula County. We believe it is critical to have science-based policy, and that it is integral that our scientific networks are reflective of all Montanans’ voices. We advocate for policy we can be proud of through community outreach and engagement, and open dialogue with community members and policymakers.
