[MCN] A Tale of Two Senators

Education

Last year, Montana’s two U.S. Senators passed an omnibus bill that weakened the Endangered Species Act <https://www.ruralvoicescoalition.org/blog/2018/4/2/omnibus-policy-update> after Cottonwood prevailed on a lawsuit that exposed a high-ranking political official for interfering with scientists' designation of critical habitat for Canada lynx, a medium sized cat that depends on snow for its survival.

Now that U.S. Senator Tester has won his bid for re-election, he is "deeply troubled" by new Endangered Species Act rules that move away from "science based decision making."

U.S. Senator Daines calls the new Endangered Species Act rules a “big win for Montana and the West!”

The new ESA regulations allow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to consider the economic impacts to the fossil fuel industry when deciding whether to protect a species under the Endangered Species Act.

Conversation Starter

- Do you agree with Senator Daines that the new ESA regulations are a big win for Montana?

- Do you think it is possible for a candidate to win one of Montana's U.S. Senate seats without lying or watering down our bedrock environmental laws?
