The Great Bear Foundation has traveled to the Arctic for the Polar Bear Ecology Field Course for the past 32 years. Each year, we venture to Churchill, Manitoba to view the great white bear, often spotting other local fauna such as arctic fox and caribou. Plus great views of the aurora borealis when it's clear! The Field Course began when GBF co-founder Dr. Charles (“Chuck”) Jonkel began taking interested and eager students who wanted to learn more about polar bears, but it quickly expanded to include participants of all ages from across the globe. All trip participants are eligible for Continuing Education Units from Salish Kootenai College.

New this year, we are launching a new field course, Sharing Habitat with Polar Bears. Learn more about all of our programs at gbf.org or contact us at 406-829-9378.

GBF’s polar bear trip is unique in that it is low impact, conservation-based and we put the bears first. All field courses are observation-based, with supplementary classroom sessions and guest speakers in the evening. All proceeds from GBF field courses directly fund conservation projects, such as the Bears and Apples program here in Missoula.
