Lakebottom Sound Series Announces New Show in October!

Missoula, MT. After a fantastic kickoff to their new season last weekend,
Lakebottom Sound Series (LSS) announces the second show in the 2018-19
series to be held on Sunday, October 21 at the Montana Theatre featuring
Allison Miller's band Boom Tic Boom. NYC-based drummer/composer/teacher
Allison Miller engages her deep roots in improvisation as a vehicle to
explore all music.

“We are so excited to be partnering with the UM jazz department to present
this show in the beautiful Montana Theatre on UM campus,” said Naomi
Siegel, founder and curator of the Lakebottom Sound Series. "This gorgeous
proscenium theater doesn't have a bad seat in the house.”

The show is supported in part by a grant from the Montana Arts Council, an
agency of the State Government.

New York City drummer Allison Miller has had a connection with Missoula for
many years, whether through collaborating with the Biomimicry Institute,
Amy Martin, or the Buddy DeFranco jazz festival. She has played with pop
musicians Brandi Carlile, Natalie Merchant, and Ani DiFranco. This
Lakebottom show will be her first time bringing her own project and music
to Missoula.

Lakebottom Sound Series is committed to presenting shows in intentional
listening environments, providing a positive experience for musicians, and
featuring women, non-binary and trans musicians.

“Ms. Miller is a drummer, bandleader and composer with an aesthetic of
limber poise, drawn at once to

brisk maneuvers and deep grooves.” –Nate Chinen, The New York Times

Hailed by Downbeat as one of the top 20 jazz drummers, Allison Miller
marries her love of composition, drumming, and community in the form of her
critically acclaimed band, Boom Tic Boom. Described as cinematic chamber
jazz, this leading-edge sextet’s music—featuring Jenny Scheinman on violin,
Dawn Clement on piano, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Ben Goldberg on clarinet,
Tony Scherr on bass, and Miller on drums—is at turns challenging and
accessible, teasing and tough, virtuosic but never overbearing, and always
grooving. Miller’s compositions reflect her diverse musical upbringing and
versatile palette and she aims to, in true collective spirit, highlight
each member of the band.

This year marks Boom Tic Boom’s 10-year anniversary and they will be
celebrating with the release of their 5th album, Glitter Wolf, on Royal
Potato Family. The band has evolved over the years developing a truly
unique sound. The current material is full of surprises and has been
described as a celebratory genre- busting organic mash up of Bach, clave,
klezmer, and the Jazz Messengers.

“Boom Tic Boom has a razor-sharp precision that recalls classic drummer-led
ensembles of 50 years ago—the music of Art Blakey, Art Taylor and Max Roach
come to mind—but Ms. Miller’s band works from a diverse sonic palette that
is unmistakably contemporary." – Martin Johnson (Wall Street Journal)

Allison teaches at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC,
Stanford Jazz Workshop, and is the Artistic Director of Jazz Camp West in
La Honda, CA. She has been appointed Arts Envoy to Thailand for her work
with Jazz Education Abroad. Allison endorses Yamaha drums, Zildjian
cymbals, Vic Firth heads, and Evans drumheads.

Boom Tic Boom has toured extensively throughout the United States and
Europe. Notable performances include the Chicago Jazz Festival, SF Jazz
Center, Earshot Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Molde Jazz,
Müenster Jazz Festival, Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, Stanford Jazz
Festival, Lugo Jazz Festival, Saalfelden Jazz, Willisau Jazz Festival, Hyde
Park Jazz Festival, Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, Reykjavik Jazz
Festival, Burlington Discover Jazz, and Iowa City Jazz Festival. The band
has been met with critical acclaim receiving 4.5 stars from Downbeat and
making “Top 10 Jazz Albums” lists for The LA Times, Downbeat Magazine, Jazz
Journalists Association, and Something Else.

Described by critics as a charismatic and rhythmically propulsive drummer
with melodic sensibility, Miller, a three time Jazz Ambassador for the U.S.
State Department, has been named “Top 20 Jazz Drummers” in Downbeat
Magazine. Her band, Boom Tic Boom, is a recipient of Chamber Music
America’s “Presenter Consortium for Jazz Grant” and Boom Tic Boom’s 4th
release, Otis was a Polar Bear, was chosen for NPR’s Jazz Critics Poll
(2016) and the title track is included in NPR’s 2018 “The 200 Greatest
Songs By 21st Century Women” publication.

“This is a rare and wonderful opportunity for folks here in Missoula,” says
Ms Siegel. “We couldn’t be more pleased to bring Boom Tic Boom’s music here
to our audiences. Don’t miss out, this band will put on a show!”

“Lakebottom Sound came into the Missoula, Montana consciousness over the
last year, and immediately it was clear we had a new and important player
in the community arts scene. Providing ‘deliberate listening’ opportunities
of any kind is a great gift, but these shows are fresh and unique,” said
John Floridis of Montana Public Radio’s Musician’s Spotlight and longtime
performer.”

“Most importantly these concerts are about making music ‘matter’ in a way
that so many are longing for,” said Floridis. “They afford musicians and
listeners the use of quiet, of space, and most importantly of silence. For
a musician, not having access to these things is like a writer not having
access to vowels in their words. These experiences, deliberate listening
experiences, are vital to what make us human. Truly.”

This concert is made possible by the following sponsors:

Montana Arts Council, Clyde Coffee, WestRidge Creative, Portico Real
