For Immediate Release

Soft Landing Missoula Presents Lecture on Climate Refugees

As climate change forces more people to flee their homes, do borders keep
getting fortified, or are there other ways humankind could be looking for
solutions? As the most recent speaker in the Soft Landing Missoula
Presents! Lecture Series, journalist and author Todd Miller will explore
the dynamics of climate, human displacement, and border security in a talk
on Monday, April 1, at the University Center Theater.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m., with Miller’s talk, titled Refuge in a
Changing World: Climate Change, Migration and Homeland Security. It
will be followed
by a brief panel discussion, in which we will consider implications of
climate migrants for Missoula and Montana plus Q&A. Afterwards, there will
be an open invitation book-signing and reception at the Mansfield Center.

“With 68.5 million forcibly displaced people currently across the globe,
many of whom have been forced to leave their homes due to conflicts with
origins in climate issues, including famine, drought and scarcity of
resources,” said Executive Director of Soft Landing Missoula, Mary Poole,
“there is no better time to have the conversation about how we can step
outside our boxes, and borders, to think of creative solutions that bring
opportunity and promise of a good life to all.”

This talk is co-sponsored by Climate Smart Missoula, the Jeannette Rankin
Peace Center, the UM College of Humanities and Sciences, the UM
Environmental Science and Natural Resource Journalism graduate program, and
the UM Climate Change Studies Program.

Miller is the author of Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and
Homeland Security, for which he won the 2018 Izzy Award for Excellence in
Investigative Journalism.

For the past 17 years, Miller has researched, written about, and worked on
immigration and border issues from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico divide. He
is also the author of Border Patrol Nation, 2014 and the forthcoming Empire
of Borders: The Expansion of the U.S. Border Around the World
<https://www.versobooks.com/books/2908-empire-of-borders> (Verso, 2019).
His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Mother Jones, The Nation
and other publications.

“We don’t often think about displaced people when we think about climate
impacts in Montana, but Missoula is certainly not immune to issues around
human migration that result from our changing climate,” said Abby Huseth,
Outreach Director at Climate Smart Missoula. “While we don’t know exactly
what the future holds, this is a great opportunity to broaden our
understanding of what it means to build a more resilient community.”
